AWR and Interim Management
The purpose of the Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) is to provide temporary agency workers with equal treatment in terms of basic working and employment conditions as if they had been employed directly to do the same job. Genuinely self-employed workers, operating through their own limited companies, are exempt. The AWR has massive implications for the temporary staffing industry and companies that source staff via agencies, but no impact on limited company subcontractors and the interim management providers who may place them. Still, some confusion remains. The Interim Management Association has published this guidance document which explains the distinctions and their impact on companies using interim managers.

Flexibility in the Modern Manufacturing Workplace
EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, in partnership with exclusive sponsor Executives Online, completed a comprehensive research programme among its membership – UK manufacturers – on their use of various flexible working practices for production and non-production staff, and their views on the business climate as encouraging flexibility. Over recent years many manufacturers have expressed concern that the UK’s flexible labour market, and consequently their wider scope to respond quickly to market conditions, has been steadily eroded. This report looks at why flexibility is important to manufacturers, how they achieve it, how manufacturers view the UK as a business environment to achieve flexibility, and what needs to be done to ensure that the UK continues to provide the flexibility that manufacturers need. It also includes case studies as exemplars in this area.

Fundamental Shift or Flash-in-the-Pan: The Use of Social Networking Sites in Recruitment
Social networking sites like LinkedIn, Xing, Viadeo and even Facebook and Twitter are playing an increasing role in helping people maintain and leverage their personal and professional networks. They’re playing a growing role in recruitment as well. Does the hype match the reality? Find out in this updated report from Executives Online. Drawing on 2009 and 2010 research among over 1,200 UK senior executives, Fundamental Shift or Flash-in-the-Pan: The Use of Social Networking Sites in Recruitment aims to answer such questions as what sites executives are using, how they rate them, how effective they are in hiring and job-seeking, and their potential to transform the recruitment landscape.

Real Deals Portfolio Management Edition
With few new deals on the horizon and liquidity events like IPOs and trade sales but a distant memory, private equity investors have had to turn their attention to portfolio management – ensuring the companies in their portfolios are well run, sustainably, for the foreseeable future. Certain resources, including interim management, cash management, and debt restructuring, are being employed like never before by private equity to help their investment companies weather the troubled economy. As the exclusive sponsor for interim management in Real Deals’ portfolio management edition, Executives Online contributed strongly to the editorial commentary on how interim management can supplement the skills of underperforming management teams or mount a full-scale turnaround.

Retirement Age Survey
The Government announced recently that it is set to scrap the default retirement age (DRA) from April 2011. The move will prevent older workers from being forced to retire at 65. The move is supported by many workers and employers groups, and the Government says the extra money raised in taxes will be used to help support an ageing population. At Executives Online, we were curious to understand what impact this change might have on our registered candidates, our clients and their employees, and also our executive recruitment and interim management business. We can see that it probably impacts succession planning, and that it may increase or decrease the supply of executives seeking roles, and the supply of opportunities for them, at varying ages. But we are stymied when trying to consider the net impact. Over 1,000 managers and executives responded to our survey.

Business Exposure
One of the key reasons companies come to us is because a senior director has unexpectedly left the company, or their traditional recruitment method is failing and they urgently need to plug the gap. The aim of this report is to identify the level of exposure created in companies by these unexpected gaps or slow permanent recruitment. Drawing on 102 surveys among HR managers and line managers responsible for hiring executive roles, Executives Online has published Business Exposure.
We look at how common the problem is. We explore the roles which are the most vulnerable, and those which are toughest to fill. We consider the problems companies face when they can’t solve a senior recruitment problem, the damage that results, and the steps companies might take to minimise it.

Challenge of Change
In Executive Online's NEW Challenge of Change report we explore how UK companies view and manage change. This groundbreaking report draws on new research involving over 1,200 senior executives in roles where they’re responsible for business transformation programmes. It explores such challenging questions as: Is change used as a strategic tool to create better companies that are more able to remain successful, or is it used reactively, in an inward-facing way? What techniques and resources are being used to deliver change? How important are senior managers in this process? And above all, how successful are change programmes?
